£1.3m project to transform Porthcawl car park into new public space

Work to begin this month as part of wider regeneration plans

WORK is set to begin on a major public realm scheme that will transform a town centre car park in Porthcawl into a new community space.

The £1.3 million project will see the Hillsboro South car park redeveloped into a landscaped public area designed to host events, support local businesses and improve access between the town centre and the Metrolink.

The car park is scheduled to close on March 20 to allow construction work to begin, while the larger Hillsboro North car park will remain open for public use.

The scheme aims to create a greener and more attractive environment for residents and visitors while also celebrating the site’s railway heritage through the reinstatement of historic rail features.

Plans for the new space include pop-up business units, flexible areas for community events and activities, and informal play features. Wildflower planting will also be introduced to enhance biodiversity and improve the visual appeal of the site, alongside improved drainage systems.

Active travel improvements form a key part of the project. These include better links between the Metrolink and the town centre, a new toucan crossing to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new route connecting Dock Street with the town centre.

Cllr Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing at Bridgend County Borough Council, said the project would help create a welcoming gateway into the town.

“The work is intended to create a more welcoming, accessible and environmentally sustainable gateway into Porthcawl town centre, and the high-quality nature of this work offers a visible snapshot of what we are trying to achieve with the wider waterfront regeneration scheme,” she said.

“This represents an exciting opportunity that will benefit residents, businesses and visitors. It is also fantastic that the town’s railway heritage is reflected in the plans, while offering flexibility for a variety of events and business opportunities.”

Further updates on the project are expected to be shared as work progresses.
