£1m investment to boost girls’ football facilities in Wales

New 3G pitch planned at Dragon Park to support future talent

GIRLS and women’s football in Wales is set to benefit from a £1 million investment aimed at improving training facilities and supporting the next generation of players.

The funding from the Welsh Government will deliver a new 3G pitch and upgraded training infrastructure at Dragon Park, the national football development centre run by the Football Association of Wales.

The improved facilities will serve as the home of the FAW Girls Regional Programme for players aged between 12 and 17, while also supporting grassroots football across Newport and surrounding areas.

The investment forms part of a wider £15 million package for sports facilities across Wales in the 2025–26 financial year, with the Welsh Government committing £60 million to sports infrastructure during the current term.

Jack Sargeant, Wales’ Minister for Sport, visited the site this week and met with coaches, players and Rhian Wilkinson, manager of the Wales women’s national team.

The minister said the investment sends a strong message to young players across the country.

“These new facilities send a clear message to every girl in Wales who loves football – there is a place for you in this game,” he said.

“By investing in Dragon Park and building on the success of the national team reaching the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025, we are ensuring that talent is never held back by a lack of opportunity.”

Young player Maizie Carrington, 13, from Pontypridd, who is part of the FAW Girls Regional Programme, said improved facilities would make a huge difference to aspiring footballers.

“Better facilities mean more time on the pitch and the chance to keep pushing towards my goals,” she said.

Strategic lead for women and girls’ football at the FAW, Bethan Woolley, said the investment would help grow participation in the sport at all levels.

“We’re grateful to the Welsh Government and Sport Wales for their investment in Dragon Park, which will be an important legacy for women’s football and a catalyst for future growth in the game,” she said.

She added that the enhanced facilities would support both grassroots players and elite development pathways while also benefiting the local community.
