PLANS to build affordable housing on the site of a former Garw Valley colliery have been handed in to Bridgend County Borough Council.

If eventually approved, the proposals could see the development of 31 affordable homes on brownfield land off Victoria Street in the village of Pontycymer.

The site was previously occupied by several buildings which formed part of the Ffaldau Colliery, and is close to a local rugby club, GP surgery and pharmacy.

Victoria Street is part of the A4064 which runs for the entire length of the Garw Valley, connecting its villages to the wider areas of Sarn and Bridgend.

It is the latest in a number of applications for the site, which date back as far as 1999, and include previous proposals for housing as well as a supermarket with parking provision.

The application which is for outline planning permission was submitted in December by developers at Kyle Spiller Ltd.

They said: “The Indicative Site Layout shows the 31 dwellings to be a mix of one, two, three, and four-bed dwellings.

“The dwellings are shown to run either side of a new road which will extend from the existing access from Victoria Street and extend to the south (broadly adjacent to Victoria Street).

“The proposed dwellings are indicated as a mix of bungalows, two-storey dwellings and two-storey apartments.”

They added: “The site is roughly rectangular in shape and narrows towards the southern boundaries of the site.

“The site broadly slopes away from Victoria Street and has steeply sloping embankments to the western and southern boundaries.”

A pre-application consultation was carried out ahead of the submission which said no formal responses had been made by the Garw Valley Community Council or any of the local councillors.

Seven local residents did however provide written responses to the plans, with some concerns raised over the location of the access being set at the narrowest part of the street, and a potential for an increase in traffic.

The outline plans will be considered for approval by the council’s planning department in the coming months.
