A BRIDGEND school has announced a change to its uniform policy that will see all children having to wear trousers as the “standard option” at the beginning of the next school year.

The announcement came from Brynteg Comprehensive school in January 2026, and is part of a shift they say is rooted in “practicality, equity, and the realities of family life.”

A recently published newsletter from the school noted that the change would be more cost effective over the course of a school year with trousers considered as being more durable and weather-proof.

The change is now set to begin in September of 2026, following a review and feedback from pupils as well as an all-female school focus group.

A section of the newsletter said: “A single, streamlined uniform reduces pressure on families, removes unnecessary distinctions, and ensures every pupil can feel comfortable and confident.

“It also aligns with our commitment to sustainability, with fewer items needed and longer-lasting wear.

“This is a positive step forward for Brynteg: simpler for parents and carers, more practical for pupils, and fully in keeping with the inclusive values we stand for.”

A spokesperson for the school based on Ewenny Road, Bridgend, said the move had also been endorsed by school governors and would make sure the uniform was “fully reflective of the needs of modern pupils.”

A statement said: “Following a recent review, Brynteg Comprehensive has agreed to change its school uniform policy so that all pupils will be required to wear trousers from September 2026.

“In arriving at this decision, the review has taken into account feedback from pupils and an all-female school focus group as well as the results of latest research from the likes of Cambridge University.

“This has concluded that in addition to being more durable, weather-proof and cost effective over the course of a school year, trousers can offer greater flexibility for movement and help to increase confidence among girls, especially during practical activities.

“As we want all pupils to be able to participate fully and comfortably in school life, our governors have endorsed the change on the basis of comfort, equality, safeguarding and practicality, and to ensure that our school uniform is fully reflective of the needs of modern pupils.”
