Man given extended sentence for rape in Cardiff

Offender sentenced to 10 years in custody with six-year extension following city centre attack

A CARDIFF man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with an additional six-year extended licence period, after admitting rape and attempted rape.

Yusuf Nur, aged 47, of Cardiff, pleaded guilty to the offences on September 15, 2025 and was sentenced on January 23 at Cardiff Crown Court.

The court heard that in the early hours of August 17, at around 5.20am, the 19-year-old victim approached police officers who were on patrol in Cardiff city centre and reported that she had just been raped on Kingsway.

Nur was quickly identified, located and arrested by officers. He was later charged with rape and attempted rape.

Initially, Nur denied having any contact with the victim. However, following extensive police work, including forensic analysis and a review of CCTV footage, he later changed his plea to guilty.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Liberty Knox, the investigating officer, praised the victim’s courage in coming forward.

She said: “The bravery it takes to come forward and report an offence like this should not be underestimated, and I hope knowing Nur has been held accountable helps the healing journey for the victim.

“An extensive amount of work went into this investigation, which ultimately led to Nur pleading guilty. I would like to thank all the officers who supported the investigation and ensured he was held accountable for his actions.”

The extended sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences and is intended to protect the public following Nur’s release.
