IN A PACKED meeting in the function room at the Fairwater Pub, in his home community of Fairwater, where he currently serves as a councillor on Cardiff Council, Neil McEvoy was unanimously selected as Propel’s lead prospective candidate to contest the new Caerdydd Penarth seat in next May’s Senedd election.
The open meeting, attended by Propel members and the public, saw McEvoy, the Leader of Propel, deliver a passionate and uncompromising speech on why he is standing and why Propel is leading the fight for a free and prosperous Wales. He took questions on the state of Welsh politics head-on, speaking directly to the concerns of local people.
McEvoy declared: “This is my home. This is where I was born and bred, and where I’m raising my family. I know our streets. I know our communities.
“This campaign is about every family in Caerdydd Penarth who wants a decent home, a good school, a safe community, and a fair chance.
“The people of Wales have had enough. It’s time to reclaim our national democratic institution for the good of the people. People power is coming back to our Senedd in Cardiff Bay.”
He added: “Labour’s dead hand over our country since the dawn of devolution – propped up by Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats – is over.
“It’s time to end Labour’s dominance, the corruption, waste, and mismanagement. It’s time to mobilise our unheard and forgotten communities. We need a strong, unwavering voice in the Senedd, and I will be that voice.”
In his speech, McEvoy also outlined Propel’s policies on energy independence, the economy, and direct democracy, emphasising that Wales can do things differently.
He said: “Propel’s vision is bold — our country can be transformed with policies that put people at the centre of everything that our government can and should do.
“This is about reclaiming our Senedd for the people and building a Wales that works for everyone.”
McEvoy also set out his personal pledges:
- Implement a People’s Enquiry into Children’s Services and Additional Learning Needs in Wales.
- Implement a People’s Enquiry into the dumping of nuclear mud off the coast of Cardiff and Penarth.
- Campaign for Robbie’s Law: a legal individual duty of candour for public officials.
- Provide a safe space in the community where everyone can share their concerns, seek support, and feel heard.
He concluded: “These are actions that put people first — the values Propel stands for. I am not the usual politician, and I have never done politics as usual; now it’s time to put people at the centre of Welsh politics.”
