Welsh-language film Effi o Blaenau set for cinema release across Wales this summer

World premiere at Glasgow Film Festival before nationwide rollout

S4C’s NEW Welsh-language feature film Effi o Blaenau is set for a major cinema release across Wales this summer.

The production, co-funded by the Welsh Government through Creative Wales, will receive its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival on March 3. A special homecoming premiere will also be held in Blaenau Ffestiniog ahead of the film’s general release.

The film will open in cinemas across Wales and the UK through MetFilm Distribution on June 19, before being broadcast later this year on S4C, Clic and BBC iPlayer.

From stage to screen

Effi o Blaenau is an adaptation of Gary Owen’s critically acclaimed play Iphigenia in Splott, relocated from Cardiff to the mountainous landscape of Eryri in North Wales.

Directed by Marc Evans (Mr Burton) and produced by Branwen Cennard in her debut feature, the film follows Effi, a young woman navigating unemployment, nightlife and limited opportunity in a small-town community.

In the lead role is rising Welsh actor Leisa Gwenllian, known for her appearances in S4C’s Itopia and On the Sea, as well as Sky’s Under Salt Marsh. The cast also includes Tom Rhys Harries, whose previous credits include Netflix’s White Lines and Apple TV’s Suspicion.

A glimpse of something more

The story centres on Effi’s weekly cycle of unemployment, clubbing and hangovers, until a chance meeting in a Llandudno nightclub with injured soldier Lee offers a fleeting glimpse of a different future. That moment of hope is soon followed by a far harsher reality, as the film explores the personal cost of wider societal failings.

Early previews have been well received. At a Film Hub Wales preview day, exhibitors described the film as “atmospheric”, “fantastic” and “grounded in its community”, with one praising its “compelling story and realistic characters”.

Industry backing

S4C’s Head of Film and Drama, Gwenllian Gravelle, said the broadcaster was proud to support the project.

“The film is a cinematic experience that originates from a specific place but resonates emotionally everywhere,” she said. “Shaped by a strong landscape and details of everyday life, the film transforms the familiar into something moving and epic.”

Wales’ Culture Minister, Jack Sargeant, highlighted both the creative and economic impact of the production.

“Effi o Blaenau is set against the dramatic backdrop of Blaenau Ffestiniog, with its misty, moody landscapes really adding to Effi’s challenging story,” he said.

“Another great benefit of this North Wales production is the economic value and job opportunities that were created locally.

“This film demonstrates what can be achieved when industry partners – in this case S4C – and Creative Wales work together to support ambitious creative projects, giving them every chance of commercial success and reaching global audiences. It’s fantastic that Effi o Blaenau has been selected for the Glasgow Film Festival… What an exciting moment for filmmaking in Wales.”

MetFilm Distribution added that it was “delighted” to be leading the UK theatrical release, describing the adaptation as “faithful and truly cinematic”, anchored by an “electric performance” from Leisa Gwenllian.

With an international premiere, nationwide cinema rollout and broadcast plans later this year, Effi o Blaenau looks set to be one of the standout Welsh film releases of 2026.
