Care home residents mark Valentine’s Day with creative recycled craft session

Heartfelt activity sparks memories, conversation and creativity at Caerphilly home

RESIDENTS at Abermill Care Home have been celebrating the run-up to Valentine’s Day with a creative activity combining sustainability, self-expression and shared memories.

The home, operated by HC-One Wales, organised a themed craft session where residents transformed spare jigsaw pieces into colourful heart decorations, proudly displaying the message “I love you to pieces.”

Using recycled materials, residents carefully selected colours and designs to decorate their creations, supporting concentration, creativity and fine motor skills while giving unused items a new purpose.

The relaxed session soon turned into a lively social gathering, with residents chatting and laughing as they worked. The Valentine’s theme prompted many to reminisce about how they met their partners, first dates and lasting relationships, creating a warm and nostalgic atmosphere throughout.

Staff say the activity forms part of the home’s wider programme of meaningful engagement, aimed at supporting wellbeing while celebrating seasonal events in inclusive and enjoyable ways.

Home manager Stephanie Williams said the event captured the spirit of the occasion.

“Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate love in all its forms, and this activity really reflected that,” she said. “It was lovely to see residents so focused and creative, but even more special to hear the conversations and memories being shared.

“Moments like these help residents feel connected, valued and truly at home.”

Abermill Care Home regularly hosts creative and reminiscence-based activities designed to encourage social interaction, promote wellbeing and ensure residents continue to enjoy meaningful experiences every day.
