MORE than £700,000 in Welsh Government funding is set to go towards plans to turn a former Merthyr Tydfil nightclub into new homes.
The latest funding from the Transforming Towns Fund includes £710,000 to redevelop the upper floors of the former Barcode nightclub at 92-94 High Street into eight new one-bed homes.
The council said Gwent Associates Limited was leading the redevelopment to create the new homes which the council said would much‑needed residential space in the town centre, with commercial units on the ground floor.
The improvements include a full internal refurbishment and retrofit including structural works, fire safety upgrades, and energy efficiency improvements.
The council said the final award of funding was subject to completion of a grant agreement with the applicant and this investment will “help bring a long‑underused building back into productive use, support town‑centre regeneration, and deliver high‑quality new homes for Merthyr Tydfil”.
The Welsh Government recently announced an extra £30.9m for local authorities to deliver regeneration projects that will transform town centres across Wales.
Since its launch in 2020 the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme has awarded more than £484m in grant and loan funding to support regeneration across Wales with this extra funding bringing the total investment for 2025-26 to £56.3m.
Projects cover areas such as the creative industries, leisure, transport, and heritage.
