PLANS to build a replacement school site in Neath Port Talbot have been submitted this month as part of the council’s strategic school improvement programme.
The application will seek approval for the construction of a new purpose-built building for the English-medium Llangatwg Community School in Neath.
If given the go-ahead by council bosses, the facility would eventually be able to accommodate up to 850 pupils on the existing school site near Tonna, along with provisions for pupils with additional learning needs.
Once completed, the site would include state-of-the-art classrooms along with flexible laboratories, roof terrace learning areas, IT suites, and a learning resource centre.
It would also feature a new sports hall and performance hall, with a range of external facilities including two sports pitches, three multi-use games areas and a forest school.
Additionally, plans say the outside of the building would have designated bus, car, and taxi drop-off zones, with electric vehicle charging points, accessible parking, and a food growing area.
A Neath Port Talbot Council spokesperson said: “The proposed development is part of a wider, multimillion-pound investment in schools across Neath Port Talbot under the SSIP in partnership with Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, which aims to ensure all pupils have access to high-quality education in modern, fit-for-purpose facilities.”
They added: “The vision for the new school is to provide a high-quality, flexible learning environment that supports the delivery of the Curriculum for Wales, while also offering enhanced facilities for both pupils and the wider community.”
The proposals for the new building will now be considered in the coming months with construction hoped to start early in 2026 if they are given approval.
