Record results and ambitious plans: Principal reflects on transformative year at Coleg Gwent

Nicola Gamlin, Coleg Gwent's Principal and Chief Executive

AS STUDENTS return to classrooms and workshops this September, Coleg Gwent’s Principal and Chief Executive, Nicola Gamlin, is marking her first year at the helm of one of Wales’ largest further education colleges.

Ms Gamlin, who stepped into the role in 2024, leads an organisation that serves thousands of learners across five campuses — including Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone, City of Newport, Crosskeys, Torfaen Learning Zone, and Usk.

Reflecting on her first 12 months, she says the best part has been “seeing the impact we make every single day — whether its watching students gain confidence, working with an amazing team of staff, or supporting our valued partners. The work we do genuinely changes lives through learning.”

From outstanding exam results to new facilities, Ms Gamlin’s first year is one full of milestones. Coleg Gwent achieved an A Level pass rate of 98.2% this summer — above Wales’ benchmark — and has just opened its new HiVE centre of excellence, offering learners access to state-of-the-art engineering and technology facilities.

The coming academic year will also see further improvements to learner support, a major new build at Crosskeys campus, upgrades in Newport, and deeper collaboration with employers to keep courses relevant to the changing world of work.

She explained: “We’ve worked hard to keep the college financially sustainable while also shaping exciting developments to our buildings and strengthening our offering to meet industry needs..

“The HiVE centre — a new multi-million-pound, purpose-built campus designed for aspiring engineers — is just one example of how we’re giving learners experiences like no other in the region, not only to just qualify but to leave confident and ready to thrive,” says Ms Gamlin.

Ms Gamlin also highlights the dedication of staff and the warm welcome she has received.

She said: “No matter the challenge, the resilience and focus of colleagues to make sure learners succeed, stands out time and again.”

With thousands of new learners stepping into college life this term, the Principal has some words of encouragement: “Be curious and don’t be afraid to ask for help. College is a big step towards independence, but you’re not on your own. Use the support available, get involved, and build a routine that works for you.”

She also stresses the important role of parents and carers: “A steady, supportive voice at home makes a huge difference. Ask about what they’re learning, celebrate small wins, and never hesitate to get in touch with us if you have a concern.”

As she begins her second year leading the college, Ms Gamlin remains ambitious for what Coleg Gwent can achieve for learners and its communities.

She concluded: “It’s a privilege to lead this organisation. I’m excited about shaping its future alongside our staff, learners, and partners. Together, we can achieve something really special.”
