IT’S TIME to tease up the hair, dust off those legwarmers, and relive the magic of the 1980s. Cardiff University is throwing it back to the decade of synth-pop, shoulder pads, and unforgettable student nights with “80s Re-Fresher Night: Part II”, a special reunion for alumni who studied at Cardiff during the 1980s.
The event, taking place on Saturday, August 30 at the Cardiff University Students’ Union, promises a nostalgic night of fun, friendship, and fantastic tunes. Whether you studied at UWIST, UCC, or the University of Wales College of Medicine, if you began or completed your studies between 1980 and 1989, this is your exclusive invitation to a night that’s strictly for those who remember it the first time around.
Following the huge success of the 2022 reunion – which saw nearly 500 alumni return to the capital – this year’s celebration will also help celebrate 50 years of the Students’ Union on Park Place.
From catching up with old mates to busting some long-lost moves on the dance floor, the night will feature a mix of live music and DJ sets, including guest appearances by two legendary SU DJs from the era.
David Walker (BSc 1986), who kept the dance floor packed at ‘Saturday in The Club’ from 1983 to 1986, and Phil Hope (BSc 1985), known for his alternative/indie night ‘Friday Night at The Club’, will be spinning a mix of 80s anthems and guilty pleasures to get everyone moving.
Sanjiv Vedi (BSc 1984), Chair of the Reunion Planning Committee and former UCC Students’ Union President (1983–1984), said: “Three years ago, we threw the most epic party for our first 80s alumni reunion – and the energy was electric.
“The night was such a hit, alumni from all over told us we had to do it again. So, by popular demand, we’re back!
“This is more than just a party – it’s a chance to reconnect, relive those legendary student nights, and celebrate the amazing community we built in Cardiff during the 80s.”
Whether you’re reconnecting with old friends, reminiscing about nights at the Hanging Gardens, or just soaking in the memories – this is your chance to relive a bit of the magic.
Tickets are on sale now and selling fast. Alumni are encouraged to bring a plus-one and spread the word to fellow classmates from back in the day.
