Two teenagers hospitalised after stabbing in Cardiff park

Police appeal for witnesses as suspects on e-bike sought following serious assault

TWO teenage boys were taken to hospital after being stabbed in a Cardiff park on Sunday evening, prompting a major police investigation.

Officers from South Wales Police were called to reports of a serious assault at Lydstep Park in the Gabalfa area of the city shortly before 7.00pm on June 1.

The victims, aged 16 and 17 and both from the local area, were taken to the University Hospital of Wales with stab wounds. Police confirmed their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and that one of the teenagers has since been discharged from hospital.

Detectives are now searching for two suspects who are believed to have been riding a Sur-Ron electric bike in and around Lydstep Park and Gabalfa Avenue at the time of the attack.

A knife believed to have been used in the assault has been recovered by officers.

Detective Inspector Phil Marchant said the incident would cause understandable concern among local families.

“It is very concerning when anyone is stabbed, but the age of these two victims is likely to worry parents and other young people in the area,” he said.

“We are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible as soon as possible, and CCTV will be key to the investigation.

“We urge witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage to please contact South Wales Police or Crimestoppers anonymously.”

Police said they are also aware of ongoing concerns surrounding the illegal and anti-social use of e-bikes and motorbikes in the Gabalfa area.

Det Insp Marchant added: “We have increased the police presence in the area, and this will continue over the coming days.”

The incident comes just days after South Wales Police introduced a dispersal order in Gabalfa as part of efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour, including reports involving off-road bikes and e-bikes around Lydstep Park.

Residents have previously voiced concerns about dangerous riding in the area, with one local resident describing the situation as a growing problem.

“They’re dangerous on the roads, they’re dangerous on the fields, they’re dangerous around the park,” the resident said.

“They cut across the fields here and they don’t care about the little kids playing football or the kids playing in the park.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting reference number 2600170643. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers.
