Academy celebrates 10 years and landmark collaboration with Loftco

THIS WINTER marks a major milestone for Academy as the much-loved Welsh Espresso Bar brand celebrates a decade since opening the doors of its first venue on December 11. What began as a single coffee house and bar has evolved into a thriving collection of social spaces, espresso bars and event venues that have become a significant part of South Wales’ cultural and hospitality landscape.

Over the past ten years, Academy has continued to grow with the energy of the communities it serves from its early days hosting street food traders, to adding new locations such as Training Ground in Penarth, Junction (South Wales’ first independent coffee drive through), 297 rooftop cocktail bar, Academy Whitchurch Road and soon to be reopening it’s bar at Platform in Cardiff Bay. Its partnership with Loftco has supported this journey, aiding Academy to become a cornerstone of landmark regeneration projects including, Goodsheds Barry, Newport Market and Albert Hall in Swansea.

Throughout this decade of expansion, Academy has remained committed to the simple values it started with: great coffee, excellent quality cocktails, warm hospitality, and a genuine connection to the local area. Its coffee, roasted in Wales by Coaltown Coffee, uses beans sourced directly from growers in Ibiraci, Brazil. The brand now employs over 110 people and remains dedicated to supporting fellow Welsh businesses, buying ingredients and baked goods from local suppliers such as Nos Da in Newport.

Customers have shaped the Academy experience as much as the team. The latte remains the most-ordered drink across venues, and favourites like the Aperol Spritz and Espresso Martini have been popular since day one. Even the humble toast served on a choice of sourdough or thick malted brown has earned cult status as the most-ordered breakfast item. Academy has also quietly become part of Wales’ cultural fabric, appearing in a number of television and film productions, including the iconic Gavin & Stacey.

Janet Morgan, Owner of Academy, reflects on the milestone with pride: “When we took over this Academy journey, we simply wanted to create a place people loved spending time in.

“To look back 10 years later at the community that has grown around us, the teams who have stayed with us, many since the early days and the incredible spaces we’ve been part of through our collaboration with Loftco is genuinely humbling.

“This anniversary isn’t just a celebration of our past, but of the people, suppliers and partners who continue to inspire our next chapter.”

The collaboration between Academy and Loftco has been instrumental in shaping some of Wales’ most vibrant social destinations over the past decade. Through projects such as Goodsheds Barry, Newport Market and the transformation of Albert Hall in Swansea, Loftco’s commitment to revitalising heritage spaces has created a natural platform for Academy to thrive.

Simon Baston, Managing Director of Loft-co, said: “Academy brings a unique energy to every development they join. Their focus on quality, creativity and community aligns seamlessly with our vision for foodhalls and regenerated destinations across Wales.

“We’re proud to have worked alongside Academy for much of their journey and are delighted to celebrate their ten-year milestone. Their presence brings heart, character and a truly welcoming experience to our spaces.”

As Academy steps into its next decade, the brand remains dedicated to its founding ethos: excellent coffee, handmade cocktails, warm interiors, friendly teams, dog-friendly spaces and a genuine commitment to local partnerships. With the expansion of sports-focused venues such as The Sidings Sports Bar and continued development across South Wales, the next ten years promise to build on a legacy already deeply rooted in community spirit, always following their ‘Work Hard & Be Nice to People’ moto.

This anniversary year is also a chance to give back to the customers who have supported Academy from the very beginning. In the days leading up to the celebration, Academy will be offering exclusive countdown treats and offers across its social channels. Followers can join the journey at @academyespressobars and @academyxfoodhalls for daily surprises and special £10 anniversary deals.

The celebrations culminate next Thursday (December 11) when Academy invites customers old and new to raise a glass together across its venues. Guests can enjoy cake, coffee, cocktails and great-value brunch offers as Academy marks ten years of community, creativity and connection. It’s a moment to celebrate everything achieved so far and to look forward to the next decade of growth, new spaces and experiences.
