Amman United narrowly secure the “double” over Trimsaran after late penalty

AMMAN UNITED grinded out a hard-fought victory, withstanding a late Trimsaran onslaught to complete the “double” for the season over their  opponents.

That’s four games unbeaten now for improving Amman, after also having their win over Milford Haven confirmed following the recent late abandonment. Three wins and a draw contrast to five straight defeats earlier in the season, which  leapfrogs United to a heady mid-table position.

Amman again introduced a former Youth player from their conveyor-belt,centre Kennedy Richards making his debut, while fellow youth product Aled Davies resumed on the wing, and both did well.

Scrum half Lee Evans landed an early penalty to put the Reds ahead but the hosts got into an early groove ,and a couple of penalties and a converted try soon took them into a 13-3 lead.

Lee Evans slotted a second penalty, before the visitors  began to get some good territory and possession, and it was no surprise when wing Dylan Matthews finished off a good handling move to touch down before halftime.

Turning around 13-11 behind, Amman really got stuck in in the second half. Rhydian Jones again led by example, covering every blade of Trimsaran grass. Alun Lewis put in his usual reliable shift in both attack and defence, while Matthew Madge, Cian Lewis and Craig Ratcliffe  worked tirelessly for the cause.

In a very tight encounter, the home side hit back well and crossed for a converted try to swing the game their way at 20-18. But, with some seven minutes remaining, Amman were awarded a penalty, and Lee Evans made no mistake.

With time running out, Trimsaran were camped on the Amman tryline. The visitors held out courageously but conceded a last-gasp penalty in a very kickable spot. Away supporters feared the worst, but the Trim kicker somehow managed to send the effort wide of the post to let the Reds off the hook.

Amman take the Six-Nations break this weekend, returning on February 14 , hoping to maintain their recent momentum at home against Haverfordwest.
