CARMARTHENSHIRE APPRENTICE DANIEL BUILDS BRIGHT FUTURE IN IT

National Apprenticeship Week highlights power of practical learning and personalised support

AS NATIONAL Apprenticeship Week gets underway, the story of a Carmarthenshire apprentice is shining a light on how hands-on experience and the right guidance can open doors to a rewarding career.

Daniel, now an IT apprentice with Carmarthenshire County Council, admits he was uncertain about his future when choosing his GCSE options in Year 9.

A conversation with a careers adviser at a school event proved to be a turning point, helping him realise there were more pathways available than he had first thought.

As he progressed through his GCSE years, Daniel began meeting regularly with careers adviser Rhys Roberts, who helped him explore his options in greater depth.

“It made my confidence a lot better because I knew there were different careers out there and different ways of going around things,” Daniel said.

Although he had initially imagined heading to university, he soon recognised that a more practical route suited him better.

“I prefer the more hands-on feel of work. I’d rather just get in there and do it,” he explained.

Determined to gain real insight into the workplace, Daniel arranged his own work experience within the council’s IT department – a move that would later prove invaluable. When an IT apprenticeship became available at Carmarthenshire County Council, Rhys alerted him to the opportunity and supported him through the application process.

Securing the apprenticeship was, Daniel said, the moment everything came together.

“It felt amazing. It felt like the hard work had paid off,” he said.

Now thriving in his role, Daniel is earning while learning and gaining the practical experience he values most.

“I find it really good and it’s a nice environment,” he added.

Reflecting on his journey, Daniel believes the support he received not only helped him choose the right path but also boosted his confidence and communication skills.

His advice to other young people considering their options is straightforward: “I’d tell them to have a go and to never give up.”

Rhys Roberts said Daniel’s journey demonstrates how apprenticeships can be the ideal route for those who prefer practical learning.

“Apprenticeships offer fantastic opportunities to develop skills, earn a wage and take the first steps into a rewarding career — and Daniel has shown exactly what’s possible when young people are supported to find the route that fits them best,” he said.

Sally Bennett, learning and development adviser at Carmarthenshire County Council, praised Daniel’s progress.

“Daniel has shown the importance of work experience and how much the opportunity gave him an insight into the world of work,” she said. “Daniel has settled well to Carmarthenshire County Council, and we are delighted with his progress in the workplace and in college. Keep up the great work, Daniel, and enjoy learning and working within your team.”
