FUNDING BOOST FOR TALYLLYN RAILWAY’S £5.53M REDEVELOPMENT DRIVE

Grants push heritage line closer to target in landmark 75th anniversary year

THE TALYLLYN Railway has secured more than £500,000 in fresh funding as it presses ahead with a £5.53 million redevelopment project during its 75th anniversary year.

The railway – widely recognised as the world’s first preserved railway – has been awarded £200,000 by the Garfield Weston Foundation towards match funding for the scheme. A further £323,707 has been granted by the National Lottery Community Fund to support a five-year community engagement programme linked to the redevelopment.

The latest awards follow a major £3,697,911 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Combined with donations nearing £375,000 to the railway’s 75 Appeal, along with Gift Aid and other funding, the total secured now stands at just over £5 million.

The ambitious scheme includes a new engineering works at Tywyn Pendre, upgraded carriage maintenance facilities and paintshop, additional volunteer accommodation, a community training hub, restoration of the original station building and workshop, and a new visitor facility at Pendre.

Sophia Weston, representing the Garfield Weston Foundation, confirmed trustees had agreed the £200,000 grant towards improving engineering and commercial facilities.

“We look forward to hearing how your important work progresses,” she said.

Rachel Richards, Funding Manager at the National Lottery Community Fund, said the organisation was pleased to back the project.

“We really liked the railway’s application for National Lottery funding and we are happy to support ‘Preserving our Past, Building our Future’ with £323,707 over five years to help the community,” she said.

Talyllyn Railway Company chairman David Ventry welcomed the news, describing it as a significant milestone in the anniversary year.

“In the year when we celebrate 75 years as the world’s first preserved railway, this is excellent news,” he said. “It’s a further recognition of the urgent need for this project.

“The programme of community engagement is also vital for the future of the railway. However, it is now essential that our 75 Appeal reaches its £750,000 target to ensure we have sufficient financial resources to move forwards with making our plans a reality.”

Fundraising officer Ian Drummond said the grants were a major boost but stressed further support was still needed.

“Although we have just over £500,000 still to find, it’s heartening that around £180,000 of this is already covered by pledges of regular donations from members of our 75 Club of donors,” he said.

“However, this still leaves us with over £300,000 to raise but, with the continued backing of our members and donors, I have no doubt we will reach our target.”
