Cwmamman United launch season with Welsh cup win

CWMAMMAN United opened their 50th anniversary season with an emphatic 4-1 win at Swansea side Blaenymaes AFC in the 1st qualifying round of the Welsh Cup.

Following a positive pre season where Cwmamman played a number of sides including Ammanford, Fleet Town, Ynysygerwn and Llanelli U20s, it was clear from the start of this match that they were well prepared for the season ahead while a large crowd of well over 200 looked forward to an exciting cup battle with the home side the underdogs.

However, within the first 35 mins Cwm’s fluid football and a number of strong attacks had delivered three goals with two for Ryan Cole and one for striker Elliot Smith.

Cam Berry and Kieran Dawe were linking well in midfield with Cam Williams also winning useful ball for his colleagues while Cwm’s defence were restricting chances for Blaenymaes’ speedy forwards.

Cwm then suffered a blow in the 37th min when Jackson Brereton received a 2nd yellow and the subsequent red card for kicking the ball away.

This energised the Blaenymaes side and Jordan Hibbert pounced on a loose ball to reduce the deficit, making it 3-1 just before half time.

In the second half Cwm’s 10 men managed the Swansea team’s attacks well and in the 68th Elliot Smith forced home a Cam Berry header that rebounded off the bar for his second goal and seal a good win for Cwm.

Cwmamman will be pleased with their first competitive game of the season and will look forward to the second round.  Next Saturday Aug 2nd they travel to Llanrumney to play Cardiff Cosmopolitan in the first round of the FAW Trophy.
