Man sent to Crown Court over alleged child grooming offence

A 44-YEAR-OLD man has been sent to Crown Court for trial after appearing before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court accused of arranging to meet a 15-year-old girl following alleged grooming.

David Campkin, of Tir Capel, Llanelli, appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (Apr 2).

Campkin is charged with meeting, or travelling to meet, a girl under 16 following earlier communication with her, contrary to Section 15 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

The court heard the allegation relates to April 26, 2023, in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. It is alleged that Campkin, being aged 18 or over, had on one or more occasions met or communicated with a girl aged 15, did not reasonably believe she was aged 16 or over, and travelled with the intention of meeting her.

It is further alleged that he intended to do something during or after the meeting which, if carried out, would have amounted to a relevant sexual offence.

The complainant’s anonymity is protected by law under Section 1 of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992.

No guilty plea was entered at the magistrates’ court hearing, and the case was sent to Swansea Crown Court for trial under Section 51 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

Campkin was granted unconditional bail.

He is due to appear at Swansea Crown Court, The Law Courts, St Helens Road, on Tuesday, May 5, at 9:00am for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
