A new initiative in Carmarthen hopes to break down barriers around technology by creating an inclusive and welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities.
A NEW community group is being formed in Carmarthen with the aim of making computing more accessible, understandable and less intimidating for people across the town and surrounding areas.
The initiative, which is currently in its early planning stages, will focus on helping anyone interested in learning about computers — from complete beginners to those with years of experience. Organisers plan to use a mix of retro computers, classic gaming systems and modern technology as hands-on tools to support learning.
Unlike traditional computer clubs, the group will place a strong emphasis on inclusion and confidence-building, rather than technical expertise. No previous knowledge or personal equipment will be required to take part.
The group’s organiser said many people still feel excluded from technology despite its growing role in everyday life.
“Computers are part of daily life, but a lot of people feel intimidated by them,” they said. “By using older systems alongside modern ones, we can show how computers really work in a practical and visual way. We want to create a friendly environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace.”
Planned activities include informal meet-ups, show-and-tell sessions, introductory computing workshops, retro gaming evenings and beginner-friendly programming sessions using simple tools. Organisers also hope to work with local libraries and community centres to ensure activities remain affordable and accessible.
The group aims to serve Carmarthen and the wider area, and is particularly keen to hear from people looking to improve basic computing skills, those with an interest in retro technology or gaming, families, older residents wanting to build digital confidence, and anyone curious about technology past and present.
An initial interest-gathering phase is now under way, with plans to hold a first informal meeting once sufficient local interest has been confirmed.
Anyone interested in getting involved, supporting the project or finding out more is encouraged to make contact.
