Local author shares powerful journey through autism and selective mutism

A young writer has turned her personal challenges into a story of resilience, confidence and hope with the release of a new book now available in local shops.

A YOUNG author from the area has spoken openly about her journey living with autism and selective mutism, after publishing a new book that documents her life experiences.

Caitlyn’s journey began in 2007, but by 2012, when she was just four years old, her life changed dramatically. Caitlyn stopped speaking entirely, a period that lasted for more than four and a half years.

During that time, she was unable to communicate either at school or at home and required support with basic daily activities, including eating and walking. Her family describe it as an extremely challenging period, as Caitlyn struggled to engage with the world around her.

At around the age of eight, Caitlyn slowly began to rebuild her confidence at home. Although she was still unable to speak in school, she started to find new ways to express herself and gradually became more independent.

Sport played an important role in her development, helping to build confidence and resilience. Her growing self-belief later led her to explore creative writing, and in 2022 she wrote a short story titled The New Actress.

Now, Caitlyn has released a new book titled I Couldn’t Talk, which focuses on her personal experiences of growing up with autism and selective mutism. The book offers readers an insight into the challenges she faced and the progress she has made over the years.

The book is currently available in local bookshops, and has already received positive feedback from readers.

Today, Caitlyn is described as far more confident in her daily life and eager to take on new challenges, continuing to inspire others through her determination and willingness to share her story.
