ON SATURDAY, January 31 a lantern parade was held on the Stackpole Estate in Pembrokeshire to celebrate ‘Gwyl Fair y Canhwyllau’, a traditional Welsh festival that marks the coming of spring.
Hosted by National Trust Cymru, over 100 people joined in the evening procession that followed a trail of large, brightly lit lanterns along the edges of the Stackpole Lakes. Crafted by Sand Palace Arts, the striking sculptures reflected Stackpole’s resident wildlife including a kingfisher, an otter, a heron, a dragonfly and a floating white swan.
Attendees carried smaller owl-shaped lanterns made in craft workshops beforehand. The parade is part of a wider programme of cultural and creative events and activities held by National Trust Cymru to celebrate Welsh culture.
