AWEL Y MOR Care Home in Gorseinon, Swansea passed a recent Care Inspectorate Wales inspection with ‘Excellent’ ratings – the best possible ratings – across the board, after being praised for operating a safe, well-maintained, caring and well-led service.
The CIW inspected Awel Y Mor Care Home in June 2025 and rated the home, run by Barchester Healthcare, as ‘Excellent’ in all four areas of the inspection – well-being, care & support, environment and leadership & management. The report stated that there was a strong sense of belonging and teamwork in the home nurtured by a very well-respected management team who encourage a positive culture and where residents are supported to reach their goals and achieve their full potential.
The CIW report found that the care staff knew their residents well and were dedicated and driven to offering them the best possible care, going above and beyond to do so. The report also praised the home environment which it said was very well equipped with specialist facilities such as a rehabilitation kitchen and a physio-led gym, and was well maintained, clean, safe and homely.
Highlighted in the report was that the staff love working at Awel Y Mor where they feel supported and have good opportunities to progress in their careers. Staff spoke very highly of their work life at the home.

One team member commented: “The opportunities that have been given to me to excel in my career have been endless. The management are superb, I cannot fault them at all.”
A colleague added: “I’m proud to say I work here. I absolutely love my job, it is such a supportive place to work.”
Another staff member said: “It’s such a lovely home, the atmosphere is great, everyone is happy, staff, residents and relatives who visit – it really doesn’t feel like work at all.”
The report found that residents and their loved ones were very complimentary about the care and support they received.
A relative commented: “I can’t speak highly enough about the place, they are so good at the little things, all the residents come first here. My loved one has a good life here.”
Another added: “Staff go above and beyond to ensure the residents are happy, they come in on their days off to spend time with the residents and do activities with them.”
Rachael Thomas, General Manager at Awel Y Mor Care Home said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Awel Y Mor has been rated ‘Excellent’ following the CIW’s latest inspection.
“It is fantastic to have the hard work and dedication of everyone here recognised. Our staff are wonderful here, everyone supports each other and pulls together. I’m so proud of our team, our residents and our home.”
Barchester’s CEO, Dr Pete Calveley, visited Awel Y Mor to congratulate Rachael and her team on the home’s Excellent ratings and award every member of staff a £500 voucher to celebrate their achievement.
He commented: “Awel Y Mor is a fantastic home delivering exceptional care to its residents, I couldn’t be prouder of Rachael and every single member of staff here.
