Swansea woman boosts career with help from employability coach during National Careers Week

NATIONAL CAREERS Week 2026 returns with the theme ‘Own Your Future’, showcasing how free careers guidance and educational resources across the UK are helping people take ownership of their career path.

Charlotte Davies, 45, from Swansea shares how employability support helped rebuild her confidence and step into a senior role.

After nearly two decades of rewarding work in the voluntary sector, Charlotte felt the urge to try something new. She was ready for the next step but after several unsuccessful applications, her confidence began to drop.

She said: “I was stuck in a cycle of apply – interview – rejection. It was frustrating and was impacting on my wellbeing.”

Despite her passion for helping others, Charlotte felt unsure how to progress.

In her previous role, Charlotte met employability coach Thanuja Hettiarachchi. As Thanuja explained how she supports people to move forward in their careers, something resonated.

Charlotte said: “As she was talking, I felt like she was talking to me. I came away and booked an appointment the next day.”

In their one‑to‑one sessions, Thanuja encouraged Charlotte to take a fresh look at her skills, experience and ambitions. Together, they explored opportunities Charlotte had never considered, including roles in the private sector and Welsh Government.

During the process, Charlotte opened up about her dyslexia for the first time.

She said: “Thanuja reassured me that being open about it wouldn’t disadvantage me. It actually meant the process could be made more equal for me.”

Careers adviser Carly Havard also supported Charlotte, helping her apply for a Personal Learning Account and strengthen her interview preparation.

Charlotte was also able to tackle her ‘imposter syndrome’. She said: “I discovered that many people I admired had progressed through non-linear routes too. That was a real revelation!”

Aiming to leave her job within a year, Charlotte expanded her search with help from friends and advisers.

With Thanuja’s help, Charlotte submitted six applications and secured three interviews in nine months.

As a reasonable adjustment, Charlotte received interview questions in advance.

Charlotte continued: “Having the chance to practise applications and having had two interviews meant I went into the third with more confidence and determination – and that’s the one where I was successful.”

Charlotte was offered the role of Senior Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Lead at Welsh Government.

Reflecting on her journey, Charlotte said: “My success started with Thanuja listening, letting me have a little cry, and giving me support through the whole process. It has finally landed me a new, rewarding and exciting role.”
