The Welfare unveils packed summer programme of theatre, music and community events

Welsh-language landmark production, international artists and family favourites set to light up Ystradgynlais venue

THE WELFARE in Ystradgynlais is preparing for a busy and vibrant summer season, with a packed programme of theatre, live music, film screenings, community celebrations and family-friendly entertainment running from May through to September.

The season opens with a major milestone for Welsh theatre, as Addysgu Rita arrives at The Welfare on May 1 and 2, marking the first time the Olivier Award-winning play has been performed in the Welsh language. Presented by Y Consortiwm Cymraeg, the production is a translation by Gwawr Loader of Willy Russell’s much-loved story of Rita, a working-class woman determined to change her life through education, and her reluctant tutor Frank.

Welsh performers Holly Carpenter and Jeremi Cockram will take on the leading roles. Carpenter, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, is known for Port Talbot Gotta Banksy and Dumpy Biscuit, while Cockram is widely recognised for his long-running role as Sion White in Pobol y Cwm.

Y Consortiwm Cymraeg was established in 2019 by The Welfare, Theatr na nÓg, Theatr Soar and Awen Cultural Trust, with the aim of delivering high-quality Welsh-language theatre while encouraging communities to engage with the arts and develop their language skills locally. Past productions have included Welsh-language versions of Shirley Valentine and The Woman in Black, with Addysgu Rita marking their latest collaboration.

The theatre programme continues with the Welsh premiere of White Lies on June 19, a darkly comic and sharply observed play exploring relationships and identity, presented by Lighthouse Theatre.

Physical theatre also features strongly this season, with Something OUTTA Nothing from O’Driscoll Collective arriving on May 21. The production blends breakin’, immersive audio and storytelling, allowing audiences to control the soundtrack and shape their own experience.

Live music will play a major part in the summer line-up, with Welsh artist Mari Mathias performing on May 9, supported by Angharad Jenkins and Patrick Rimes. The trio will bring a mix of folk tradition and contemporary energy to the stage.

International artists are also featured, including Malian musicians Bassekou Kouyate and Amy Sacko on May 18, offering an intimate performance rooted in West African musical tradition. Panedeni will follow on June 26 with a distinctive fusion of Welsh and Arabic influences.

Classical music fans will be treated to a special performance from the Welsh Chamber Orchestra on June 18 as part of their 40th anniversary tour, featuring works by Mozart and Haydn alongside a new commission by composer Sarah Frances Jenkins.

Later in the season, Nashville duo Willow Hill return on August 20 following a popular previous performance, while The Jive Aces will close the summer programme with their high-energy jump jive and swing show on September 11.

Families are also being catered for throughout the school holidays. Claytime, from Indefinite Articles, takes place on May 27 during the Whitsun half term, inviting young children to shape the performance through play. In August, The Impossible Island of Flabbergast arrives on August 13, bringing comedy and adventure from theatre company Flossy and Boo.

Community events remain at the heart of The Welfare’s programme, including Gŵyl y Fflach on May 10, a dedicated day for adults with learning disabilities and their families. The event includes workshops in drama, drumming, dance and crafts, culminating in a performance by Dragons’ Heart and Dragons’ Soul.

The venue will also take part in Great Big Green Week with a screening of Ackroyd and Harvey: The Art of Activism on June 8, followed by a community clothes swap aimed at promoting sustainable fashion and climate action.

Film continues to form an important part of the programme, including Frida Kahlo on July 31 as part of the Exhibition on Screen series, alongside a wider programme of screenings, exhibitions and live broadcasts.

June will also include a focus on Pride Month, with screenings such as 3000 Lesbians Go to York and Madfabulous, celebrating LGBTQ plus voices and stories.

Wynne Roberts, Managing Director at The Welfare, said the summer programme reflects the venue’s commitment to offering something for everyone.

“This summer programme really reflects what The Welfare is all about, bringing people together through a wide range of experiences, from powerful theatre and live music to community events and family shows,” he said.

“We’re especially proud to be opening with the first Welsh-language production of Addysgu Rita, and to continue offering accessible, high-quality events for everyone in our community.”

Many events will be offered on a Pay What You Can basis to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
