Welsh Conservatives call for updated guidance on single-sex spaces

Party urges public bodies to review policies following Supreme Court ruling

THE WELSH Conservatives have called on public bodies across Wales to update their guidance on single-sex spaces following a recent Supreme Court ruling relating to sex-based rights.

The call comes after reports that Gwent Police could face legal action over staff guidance which states that transgender employees are entitled to use facilities corresponding to the gender in which they present.

The issue has reignited debate over how public sector organisations should interpret and implement the Supreme Court’s judgment, with political parties and campaign groups continuing to discuss its implications for workplace policies and public services.

Commenting on the matter, Natasha Asghar MS, the Welsh Conservatives’ Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care, said public bodies should ensure their policies reflect the court’s decision.

“All public bodies in Wales should respect the Supreme Court’s very clear ruling,” she said.

“Women in all spheres of life, including the workplace, should be able to access female-only toilets.

“The Welsh and UK Governments need to take a lead on this and ensure that the law is followed to protect women and girls. They can do this by issuing updated guidance to all public bodies.”

The Welsh Conservatives say both the Welsh and UK Governments should provide clarity to public sector organisations on how the ruling should be applied in practice.

Neither the Welsh Government nor Gwent Police had responded to the comments at the time of publication.

The Supreme Court ruling has prompted a review of policies by a number of organisations across the UK, with guidance and implementation continuing to be examined by public bodies, employers and legal experts.
