IMPROVED safety measures at a pedestrian and cyclist crossing on the A5 at Pentre Berw on Anglesey have been agreed. North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Andy Dunbobbin had received representations from members of the public concerned about the crossing point where Lon Las Cefni meets the A5, close to the bridge over the Afon Cefni. The crossing forms part of the popular Lon Las Cefni route and is used regularly by walkers, cyclists and families.
To better understand the issues raised, the PCC visited the site on May 11, meeting with cyclist Emyr Roberts and two officers from Anglesey County Council’s Highways team, together with Highways portfolio holder, Councillor Ieuan Williams, to view the crossing and discuss concerns firsthand.
Emyr Roberts highlighted that vehicles travel at speeds of up to 60mph along this stretch of road and that existing signage warning drivers of pedestrians and cyclists is insufficient. Mr Roberts believed this creates a significant safety risk for those using the crossing.
Anglesey County Council has agreed to bring forward its review of signage and other safety measures in the area, with a view to making the crossing safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
PCC Andy Dunbobbin said: “Road safety is a clear priority within my Police and Crime Plan, and I have pledged to work closely with local communities and local authorities to make our roads safer.
“I am pleased to see that the County Council has responded to a road safety issue identified by the local community and is working with them to address those concerns.
“In the case of Pentre Berw, members of the public have identified a genuine safety issue, and the measures they wish to see would help reduce risk and improve public safety.
“I understand that new signage and improved road markings will soon be installed, which is welcome news.”
The PCC added that improving signage at locations such as the Lon Las Cefni crossing aligns with the Council’s aims of supporting safer, more accessible use of the rights of way network by residents and visitors alike.
Emyr Roberts said: “I would like to express my thanks to the Commisisoner for visiting Anglesey. Thanks also to members of the Isle of Anglesey Council Highways Department for coming to the site.
“I am grateful to everyone for agreeing that the crossing site needs to be reconsidered in terms of public safety and welcome the Council’s proposals to do this.”
