Visitors invited to search the town for free original artwork during week-long exhibition
A LIVELY new art exhibition in Cardigan this April is offering visitors the chance to do more than admire paintings — they’ll also be able to hunt down and keep free original artwork hidden around the town.
Running from 19–25 April at The Corn Exchange, Guildhall, Aberteifi, Lock Up Your Grandads — The Girls Are Coming to Cardigan is the latest exhibition by artist Sue Dewhurst, celebrating the bold, funny and often overlooked women of everyday life.
As part of the week-long event, Sue will be hiding one piece of original artwork each day somewhere in Cardigan, inviting members of the public to search for it and take it home — turning the town centre into a playful, interactive art trail.
Inside the exhibition itself, visitors will be encouraged to join in with a range of activities, including a dress-up corner where people can become their own “Owd Lass”, as well as retro sweets inspired by childhood memories and a space to share stories of unforgettable women in their own lives.
Sue’s work centres around her much-loved “Owd Lasses” — vivid, character-driven paintings inspired by working-class women whose stories are not always seen or celebrated in traditional art spaces.
“These women are everywhere — funny, sharp, resilient,” she said. “This is about celebrating them and making art feel welcoming, not intimidating.”
The exhibition will also feature guest makers including Dogem Glass, alongside Sue’s rural and coastal-inspired paintings.
Entry is free, and visitors are encouraged to explore Cardigan, join in with the fun, and perhaps even go home with a hidden artwork of their own.
