Powys young people share ideas to shape future of their communities

Countywide event gives youth a platform to influence local decision-making

YOUNG people from across Powys gathered during the February half-term for a countywide event aimed at ensuring their voices play a key role in shaping future decisions affecting their communities.

The engagement event, held in Llandrindod Wells, was organised by Powys County Council in partnership with Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations as part of the wider Speak Truth to Powys project.

Young people travelled from across the county to take part in the discussions, sharing their experiences and ideas on how to improve opportunities and services for their peers.

The themes explored during the day were based on feedback gathered through a countywide survey organised by PAVO, which received more than 270 responses from young people.

Participants discussed issues they felt were most important to them, including creating a stronger sense of belonging in their communities, improving safety, ensuring access to affordable and reliable transport, and increasing support for health and mental health.

They also highlighted the need for more opportunities to take part in activities designed for young people.

Throughout the event, participants offered practical suggestions for improvement. These included clearer and more youth-friendly communication about jobs and activities, safer transport options, reduced leisure centre fees and better support for young carers.

A consistent message emerged from the discussions: young people want to be listened to and actively involved in shaping solutions.

Councillor Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys at Powys County Council, praised the ideas shared by those who attended.

“The ideas and ambition shown by young people at this event were remarkable,” he said.

“Their honesty and determination to make Powys a better place for themselves and their peers gives me real hope for the future.

“Young people are setting out a clear vision for a fairer Powys – one where they feel connected, safe and supported. We are committed to working alongside them to turn that vision into action and to making sure their voices truly shape the decisions that affect their lives.”

Clair Swales, chief executive of Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations, thanked everyone who took part.

“Thank you to all the young people who took the time to respond to our survey and to come along to the event in Llandrindod Wells,” she said.

“The response shows how much they care about the future of Powys.

“The Speak Truth to Powys project is important for everyone in the county, young and old, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with Powys County Council and seeing the difference these young voices will make.”

Following the event, the council and PAVO say they will work directly with young people to develop both immediate actions and longer-term improvements based on the priorities identified during the discussions.
