Welsh residents want plumbers to be officially registered

Survey finds overwhelming support for tougher safeguards to protect drinking water in homes

NEW research has revealed strong public support in Wales for tighter safeguards around household drinking water, with the vast majority of homeowners saying plumbers should be properly qualified and officially registered.

A survey carried out for WaterSafe, the UK’s national register of approved plumbers and water professionals, found that 92 per cent of Welsh homeowners believe plumbers should be qualified and vetted before working on domestic water systems.

According to the findings, 65 per cent of those polled strongly agreed that the Government should make it compulsory for plumbers and other installers working on drinking water systems to hold a minimum set of qualifications and be listed on an official register. A further 27 per cent said they somewhat agreed.

WaterSafe says the results demonstrate how strongly people value competence and trust when it comes to those installing and maintaining plumbing systems in their homes.

Jonathan Samuel, managing director of WaterSafe, said the survey sends a clear message about public expectations.

“These findings show that people want reassurance that the person working on their home’s plumbing is properly trained, competent and accountable,” he said.

“WaterSafe-registered contractors are fully qualified, vetted on-site and supported by the UK’s water companies. They are trained to work safely with drinking water and help households avoid issues such as contamination, poor installation and costly repairs.”

He added that, unlike the gas industry, the UK currently does not have a mandatory register covering all plumbers.

“While the UK doesn’t currently have a mandatory plumbing register like Gas Safe Register, WaterSafe already offers homeowners a simple way to find trusted, qualified professionals who meet strict standards for protecting drinking water,” he said.

WaterSafe is encouraging homeowners planning plumbing work – from fitting a new kitchen tap to installing a bathroom – to check its free online register to find approved contractors.

All members listed with WaterSafe hold recognised plumbing qualifications, carry appropriate insurance and receive specialist training in the Water Fittings Regulations, which are designed to protect the safety and quality of drinking water.

Using an approved plumber can help reduce the risk of contamination caused by incorrect fittings or poor workmanship and may also remove the need to notify local water companies before certain types of plumbing work is carried out.
