Deputy First Minister leads VJ Day 80th anniversary commemorations

A SPECIAL ceremony has been held in Cardiff to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, honouring Welsh veterans who served in the Asia Pacific during the Second World War.

The service took place on Thursday (Aug 14) at the Wales National War Memorial, where Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies laid a wreath alongside MP Dame Nia Griffith and Mr Masaki Ikegami, Deputy Ambassador for the Japanese Embassy in the UK.

The event paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the Far East, many of whom endured harsh conditions as prisoners of war before returning home to rebuild their lives.

Following the service, the Deputy First Minister hosted a private reception at Cardiff’s Temple of Peace for the families of VJ veterans, providing an opportunity to share memories and reflect on the legacy of those who served.

VJ Day, marked annually on August 15, commemorates the surrender of Japan in 1945 and the end of the Second World War.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Irranca-Davies said: “Today we honour the Welsh veterans and all those who served in the Asia Pacific during the Second World War. On this 80th anniversary, we remember not only their service, but also the importance of reconciliation. We must ensure their stories and sacrifices are never forgotten, so that future generations can understand the true cost of war and the value of peace.”
