Holyhead Port temporarily closed following ferry berthing incident

Holyhead Port has been temporarily closed after a “berthing incident” involving a Stena ferry, Stena Line Ports Ltd has confirmed. The port is currently closed to passengers while the incident is under investigation.

A spokesperson said:

“A berthing incident occurred on Wednesday 7 January 2026 as the Stena Estrid was docking at Holyhead Port. Passengers have disembarked as normal, and the incident is currently being investigated. Holyhead Port is temporarily closed, and ferry operators are notifying customers.”

Eyewitnesses reported the incident on social media, describing issues at Terminal 3. One witness suggested the ferry may have taken on water, possibly due to damage below the waterline. Divers are understood to be travelling from Liverpool to conduct underwater inspections and assess any damage to both the vessel and port infrastructure.

“At this stage, the situation remains ongoing,” the witness added. “It is sensible to expect some disruption at the port while safety checks are carried out.”

Irish Ferries, which also operates from Holyhead, has issued updates on delays affecting some of its services.

  • The 1.15pm sailing to Dublin has been delayed until 7pm due to “extraordinary reasons”.
  • The 7.30pm service to Dublin is currently uncertain, but affected passengers can be accommodated on the 7pm sailing instead.
  • The 1.45pm service from Dublin to Holyhead has been cancelled, with passengers offered a later sailing at 7.45pm.
