HMP Berwyn staff member joins justice system colleagues for special sporting event
A PRISON worker from Wrexham swapped the prison gates for the rugby pitch to celebrate International Women’s Day as part of a special event bringing together women from across the justice system.
Amber Jackson, an Operational Support Grade at HMP Berwyn, represented the prison at a rugby event held at Newbold-on-Avon Rugby Club.

The event, organised by HMPPS Women’s Rugby and the Prison Service Sports Association, brought together women working across prisons and probation to take part in matches while celebrating leadership, teamwork and resilience.
Women now make up around 55 per cent of staff across HM Prison and Probation Service, including more than 41 per cent of those working in prisons.
Jackson joined the Prison Service in December 2021 after studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at Wrexham Glyndŵr University.
Inspired by her grandfather, who served as a prison officer at HMP Brixton, she decided to pursue a career in public service after seeing a role advertised during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As an Operational Support Grade, Jackson works across key areas of the prison including the main gate, visits and the control room, where she helps ensure the safe and secure running of the establishment.
Away from work, she has played rugby since the age of 13 and says the sport has always been a major part of her life.
“I’ve been playing rugby since I was 13 and I’ve always played tighthead prop,” she said.
“What I love about the sport is that no matter your size, age or ability, there’s always a position for you. It’s about teamwork, belonging and the family-like relationships you build with teammates and coaches.”
She said representing the Prison Service team on International Women’s Day made the experience even more meaningful.
“Rugby isn’t always seen as a ‘feminine’ sport, so it’s important to show that women can thrive in any environment, on the pitch and in public service,” she added.
The event also featured guest speaker Sally Hill, a former women’s rugby international, who spoke about leadership and creating opportunities for women in sport and public service.
Lilli Ives Campion, an England rugby player, also attended the event.
Participating organisations included the Scottish Prison Service, Fire Service, Police, Civil Service and Sports Council, highlighting the role women play across a wide range of public services.
