Knee replacement transforms man’s life after decades of pain

North Wales patient back on his feet and walking mountains following surgery

A NORTH wales man who endured more than four decades of knee pain says his life has been transformed following surgery at a private hospital.

Paul Armitage, 57, from Gwynedd, has regained his mobility after undergoing a total knee replacement at Spire Yale Hospital, carried out by consultant orthopaedic surgeon Koldo Azurza.

Mr Armitage had suffered ongoing knee problems since rupturing his cruciate ligament while playing football over 40 years ago. Despite undergoing three previous operations, his condition worsened, leaving him in constant pain and struggling with everyday activities.

“Before the knee replacement, I struggled to walk any distance longer than 10 minutes,” he said. “The pain would start, my limp became more prominent, and even my opposite hip began hurting.

“My leg had become severely bowed, and everyday activities felt like a challenge.”

Following a consultation at the hospital’s Chesney Court outpatient and diagnostic centre, Mr Armitage said he felt reassured about proceeding with surgery.

“Mr Azurza was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. He put me at ease and explained both the benefits and all possible outcomes honestly,” he said.

After undergoing the procedure, Mr Armitage faced a difficult initial recovery but remained committed to his rehabilitation programme.

“Those early weeks were extremely painful, but I did my physio religiously. The improvement was significant within the first six weeks,” he added.

He now describes the results as “lifechanging”, with a dramatic improvement in both mobility and quality of life.

“My knee is straight, I can stand and walk for hours, and activities I used to dread no longer worry me,” he said.

Even day trips shopping with his wife to cities such as Liverpool and Manchester—once a source of discomfort—are now manageable.

In a milestone moment, Mr Armitage recently completed a walk to Marchlyn Mawr lake in Snowdonia, something he said would have been impossible before surgery.

“I was absolutely jubilant that I could do the walk,” he said.

Hospital director Sheryl Smith said the case highlights the impact specialist care can have on patients’ lives.

“Stories like this truly demonstrate the lifechanging impact that high-quality orthopaedic care can have,” she said. “We are delighted to see such a positive transformation in this gentleman’s mobility and confidence.”

Mr Azurza added that the patient’s determination had played a key role in his recovery.

“He approached his recovery with dedication and a positive attitude, and that commitment has been central to his outstanding outcome,” he said.

“Knee replacement surgery can make a significant difference to patients living with long-term pain, and it is rewarding to see him now enjoying walking, travelling and daily life without limitation.”

Mr Armitage praised the care he received throughout his treatment.

“I cannot speak more highly about the way I was treated,” he said. “From my experience, I would recommend Spire Healthcare to anyone needing a surgical procedure.”
