Major interchange plan and safety schemes form part of £115m Wales-wide investment
CAERPHILLY County Borough Council has welcomed a significant funding boost from the Welsh Government, aimed at transforming local transport and improving connectivity across the area.
The announcement forms part of a wider £115 million investment distributed to councils across Wales through the Regional Transport Fund for 2026–27. Caerphilly is set to benefit from a £4 million allocation, which will support a range of key projects designed to modernise infrastructure and enhance travel options for residents.
At the heart of the plans is a major new transport interchange in Caerphilly town centre. The scheme will see the existing railway and bus stations redeveloped into a modern, integrated hub, creating a more efficient and accessible gateway for commuters and visitors alike.
Additional projects earmarked for funding include road safety improvements outside Markham Primary School, further investment in Active Travel routes across the county borough, and measures linked to 30mph speed limit exemptions.
The Welsh Government has identified Caerphilly as a strategically important town within the South Wales Valleys, underlining its role as a key transport and economic centre.
Council leader Jamie Pritchard said the authority was pleased to secure funding for one of its priority schemes.
He said: “We welcome the £4 million award from Welsh Government through the Regional Transport Plan for the Caerphilly Interchange. The interchange, along with the A469, was one of two priorities that the council put forward to the Cardiff Capital Region for investment.
“We announced in November 2025 that we will be ensuring the A469 gets rebuilt, so the council will be taking this forward. Continued engagement with Welsh Government will take place on the A469, and I look forward to keeping residents updated.”
