Cold Barn Farm springs into action to clean-up Trevethin

TREVETHIN is looking noticeably tidier after 10 bags of litter were collected in just four hours, as part of Spring Clean Cymru.

Residents of Trevethin joined staff from Cold Barn Farm Community Centre and Keep Wales Tidy for the clean-up on Monday (March 16), with drinks bottles, household electricals and broken pallets among the rubbish and recycling collected.

The event also helped shine a spotlight on the community centre’s new status as a Litter Picking Hub, where individuals, families, groups and businesses can borrow free equipment – including litter pickers, hoops, hi-vis vests and bags – to carry out safe clean-ups.

Speaking after the event, Jeanine Jackson at Cold Barn Farm Community Centre, said: “We’re thrilled to be a Litter Picking Hub and keeping the residents of Trevethin keep our natural spaces clean.

“We’ve had a family book equipment already and they’re off picking around their street. It’s exciting thinking about what a positive change this could bring.”

Funded by Welsh Government, there are now nine Litter Picking Hubs open across Torfaen, based in accessible venues, such as community council offices, community centres, Pontypool Indoor Market and Cwmbran Boating Lake Cafe.

Thom Board, Torfaen Project Officer at Keep Wales Tidy said: “Today’s Spring Clean Cymru event showed exactly what our Litter Picking Hubs are all about – making it easy and accessible for anyone who wants to help keep their community clean, safe, and enjoyable.

“The Hubs offer the tools, support, and confidence people need to take positive action and become local litter heroes.

“I’m so excited to see more people getting involved, using the equipment, and joining the growing movement to care for the places we all love.”
