Foster Carers in Cardiff celebrate contribution of children who foster

Foster carers in Cardiff celebrated the vital contribution their own children make to fostering, as part of Children of Foster Carers Week, earlier this month (October 13–19).

To mark the week, Foster Wales Cardiff held a special Graffiti Workshop with local creative group Hurts So Good, bringing together both foster children and birth children for a day of fun, creativity, and connection.

During the session, the children were encouraged to design their own artwork on paper before transforming their ideas into graffiti-style creations on individual canvases — which they were able to take home as a lasting reminder of the day.

While some families worry about how fostering might affect their own children, many find that the experience is a deeply positive one. Growing up in a fostering household can help children develop empathy, resilience, and understanding. Many also form strong, lasting friendships with the children who come to live with their families.

Harry, age 12, has been part of a fostering family for four years.

He said: “It was a bit strange at the start as I was young and didn’t know what to expect, but it’s fun to have another child to play with in the house and go on holiday with.

“When our foster brother first arrived, he was quite shy, but then my mum gave us some money to buy something, and when we came home, we played games together – that really helped him settle in.”

Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Ash Lister said: “The children of foster carers play a huge role in creating a welcoming, loving environment for everyone in the household.

“They share their homes, their families, and their hearts — and we’re so proud to celebrate them. Their empathy, resilience, and kindness help foster children feel safe and included, and their contribution is truly invaluable to fostering in Cardiff.”

Children of Foster Carers Week was an opportunity to recognise and thank these amazing young people for the part they play in helping foster children feel safe and included.
