Two-year partnership delivers major boost for home-based palliative and bereavement services
A PARTNERSHIP between City Hospice and St David’s Dewi Sant shopping centre in Cardiff has raised more than £45,000 to support vital hospice services for families across the capital.
City Hospice was appointed St David’s Cardiff’s charity of the year in 2023, with the partnership running from October 2023 until December 2025. Through a wide range of fundraising and community activities in the heart of the city centre, the partnership raised £45,066.18, rising to £78,547.07 when match funding from the Hodge Foundation was added to donations made during the Light up a Life appeals in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
One of the biggest contributions came from the popular Big Christmas Wrap events, which alone raised £31,480. Additional funds were generated through glitter stations, bucket collections and fundraising linked to major city centre events, including the Taylor Swift concert.
Beyond fundraising, the partnership also focused on community engagement and raising awareness of hospice care. City Hospice hosted a number of Ribbons of Remembrance displays at St David’s, allowing members of the public to honour loved ones by tying a ribbon and leaving a personal message. The charity also delivered bereavement training to shopping centre staff, extending support beyond its own clinical teams.
St David’s staff also supported the hospice outside the centre, volunteering at events such as the Sparkle Walk and Forever Flowers, and taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon in 2024. With help from the St David’s team, City Hospice was also able to join the Pride parade in both 2024 and 2025, increasing the visibility of its work across the city.
Katie Vaughan, Senior Community Fundraiser at City Hospice, said the partnership had made a lasting impact:
“We are absolutely thrilled with the total raised thanks to our incredible partnership with St David’s Dewi Sant. The team have been incredibly supportive of City Hospice and what we aim to achieve as a charity.
“Raising over £45,000 has already made, and will continue to make, a significant difference to the people we care for in Cardiff.”
Helen Morgan, Centre Director of St David’s Cardiff, added:
“It has been an absolute pleasure to support City Hospice through our charity partnership over the past two years.
“Through a wide-ranging programme of initiatives and fundraising activities, we have raised a significant sum to support the vital work City Hospice delivers within the community, and we would like to thank our guests for their generous contributions.”
City Hospice, established in 1984, is the only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in Cardiff, supporting patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses including cancer, dementia, motor neurone disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The charity also provides bereavement counselling and support services for families.
