Marathon, ultra and relay added as popular trail event expands
RABBIT RUN WALES is set to return in 2026 — and organisers say it will be the biggest and most exciting edition yet.
Taking place on Saturday, July 18, the popular trail running event will introduce two brand-new distances: a full marathon and a 65K ultra marathon. There will also be a marathon relay option for the first time.
Last year’s 40K race has now been extended to the official marathon distance of 42.2K, while the new 65K ultra will offer an even tougher challenge for experienced runners.
Stunning scenery and iconic landmarks
The much-loved 12K race will remain a key feature of the event, giving runners the chance to race through the private grounds of the Merthyr Mawr Estate and the spectacular Merthyr Mawr Warren National Nature Reserve.

Participants will once again tackle the famous river crossing before descending the Big Dipper — the highest sand dune in Wales.
The new marathon and ultra marathon routes will incorporate everything the 12K offers, but will also take runners along the dramatic Glamorgan Heritage Coast, known for its towering cliffs, hidden coves and breathtaking coastal views.
Highlights along the route include Ogmore River, Ogmore-by-Sea, Southerndown, Dunraven Bay and the picturesque village of Monknash. Ultra runners will go even further, completing an additional scenic loop through Llantwit Major.
New marathon relay
For those looking to take on a team challenge, 2026 will also see the introduction of the first-ever marathon relay. The relay is open to 20 teams of up to five runners, with each leg split into varying distances.
Race Director Steve Brace of Run 4 Wales said: “Rabbit Run Wales is a true trail running paradise and has so many different terrains on offer for participants to enjoy.
“Adding a marathon and ultra marathon for 2026 is something we’re incredibly excited about and these new distances will give runners even more time to soak up the stunning scenery — from fast forest tracks and rugged climbs to open hillsides and sandy dunes, this event has something for everyone.
“We know people have been itching to take part in a longer run here and we can’t wait to welcome all our runners to take on these new challenges and experience how special this area is.”
The event is organised in partnership with the Merthyr Mawr Estate.
Early bird entries now open
A limited number of early bird entries are available across all distances, offering runners a £5 saving compared to general entry prices. Organisers say places are expected to fill quickly.
The marathon relay costs £85 per team, or £75 for affiliated teams.
Participants can also book camping and forest sauna sessions at Candleston Woods, giving runners the opportunity to make a full weekend of the event.
