Wind Ensemble founder celebrates milestone birthday with musical community

Special buffet gathering marks 70th birthday and two years of success for local U3A ensemble

MEMBERS of the Pembrokeshire U3A Wind Ensemble came together for a special afternoon celebration as their musical director, Colin Cunliffe, marked his 70th birthday.

Rather than holding the group’s usual rehearsal, Cunliffe organised a birthday buffet, saying it was an opportunity to thank the people who have helped make the ensemble such a success since it was formed two years ago.

Among the guests was Carol Mathews, who originally gave the go-ahead for the ensemble to be established under the Pembrokeshire U3A banner.

Also attending were the Mayor and Mayoress of Haverfordwest, Alan Buckfield and Carol Buckfield. Cunliffe thanked the mayor for his continued interest in the ensemble and for encouraging the group to become the musical support for civic events in the town.

He also expressed his appreciation to Vanessa Lewis-Camacho, who helps organise the town’s civic events and has supported the ensemble in taking part in them.

Members said the celebration provided a welcome chance to socialise and meet guests in a different setting from their usual rehearsals, while also offering an opportunity to express their thanks to those who have supported the ensemble’s development.

The afternoon brought together ensemble members and supporters for what was described as a relaxed and enjoyable gathering marking both a personal milestone and the continuing success of the group.
