Wintry weather paralyses schools across Carmarthenshire

Hazardous travel conditions force headteachers to shut schools across the county

SCHOOLS across Carmarthen and the wider Carmarthenshire area have been closed today due to snow and icy conditions, with hazardous travel and unsafe school sites prompting precautionary action.

Carmarthenshire County Council confirmed that a significant number of primary and secondary schools are shut following snowfall overnight and freezing temperatures, which have made roads, pavements and school grounds dangerous for pupils and staff.

Among the schools affected are Abergwili Primary School, Queen Elizabeth High School, Parcyrhun Primary, St Mary’s Primary, Y Dderwen Primary, Y Fro Primary and Y Felin Primary, along with many others across the county.

The closures come as parts of west Wales remain under a Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice, with conditions expected to remain challenging throughout the day. Localised snowfall and widespread ice have caused travel disruption, particularly on rural roads.

Council officials said decisions were taken by headteachers based on local conditions, access to school buildings and the safety of transport routes, including school bus services.

Parents and carers are being advised to check the Carmarthenshire County Council school closures website for the most up-to-date information, as the situation may change depending on weather conditions.

Further disruption cannot be ruled out if freezing temperatures persist overnight.
