Fire crews stage major water rescue exercise at Llys-y-frân Lake

Specialist teams from across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire take part in large-scale training operation

FIREFIGHTERS from across Mid and West Wales took part in a major water rescue training exercise at Llys-y-frân Lake earlier this week.

Crews from Carmarthen, Haverfordwest and Milford Haven Fire Stations were involved in the scenario-based exercise on Monday, January 19, organised by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The 200-acre lake, set in the foothills of the Preseli Mountains, provided a challenging and realistic environment for the operation.

The exercise simulated a serious incident involving a collision between two boats, leaving multiple casualties scattered across the lake and along the shoreline. Specialist swift water rescue teams were deployed to locate and recover the victims under conditions designed to closely mirror a real-life emergency.

To enhance realism, mannequins of varying sizes and weights were positioned throughout the area — some floating on the surface, others submerged, and several placed along the water’s edge. Firefighters were tasked with carrying out coordinated search operations and safely recovering casualties while maintaining clear communication with the Incident Commander and other crews.

Boat teams conducted systematic searches across the lake, while wading crews were sent into shallow and inaccessible areas along the shoreline. The exercise tested key skills including casualty handling, teamwork, decision-making and effective communication under pressure.

Running from the afternoon into the evening, the session allowed both Wholetime and On-Call Firefighters to take part and put their training into practice.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the exercise was vital in ensuring crews remain fully prepared to respond to water-related emergencies across the region.

The Service is currently recruiting On-Call Firefighters, who play a crucial role in protecting local communities. The role offers opportunities for training, skill development and teamwork, alongside paid retainer and call-out fees.

Further information on becoming an On-Call Firefighter is available through Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
