Rare mining archive and historic lamp to go under the hammer at new Swansea auction house

A newly launched local auction business is bringing significant pieces of Welsh industrial history to public sale

A NEW Swansea-based auction house has announced the discovery and consignment of a rare collection of historic mining documents and artefacts, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s industrial past.

Homefront Auctions, a newly established local business, has revealed that it has been entrusted with the Lonlas Colliery Company Limited Archive, a rare collection of original documents dating from 1912 to 1925.

The archive includes letters, ledgers and cheques from the Lonlas Colliery Company and has been held privately for generations by the descendants of the original colliery owner. The documents have never previously been publicly available and provide an unseen insight into Swansea’s coal industry during the early 20th century.

The collection has now been consigned for sale in Homefront Auctions’ latest auction, which closes on Tuesday, February 10.

Alongside the archive, the auction will also feature a rare John Jones of Pontyberem miners’ lamp, dated 1908, which was used by a local miner in Blaengwynfi. The lamp is described as an important and highly collectible piece of Welsh mining heritage.

Homefront Auctions said the items represent an important part of Wales’ industrial story and reflect the rich history of mining communities across South Wales.

As well as the mining archive and lamp, the auction will include a range of Welsh sporting memorabilia, including Swansea City and Wales rugby programmes, signed Wales and Ospreys shirts, and a collection of Neath RFC memorabilia, alongside other nostalgic and collectable items.

The new auction house said it is proud to be bringing historically important Welsh items to market and making them accessible to collectors, historians and the wider public.

The sale is expected to attract strong interest from collectors, heritage enthusiasts and those with connections to the region’s mining communities.
