Dog struck and dropped on concrete in disturbing CCTV footage
A SWANSEA man who was captured on CCTV repeatedly hitting and dropping a Jack Russell Terrier has been jailed for 18 weeks.
Cameron Lee Wilson, aged 18, of Holly Oak Road, Penllergaer, appeared before Swansea Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (July 9), where he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
Assault caught on camera
The incident took place on March 16 this year in the Pentrepoeth Road area of Morriston. CCTV footage showed Wilson picking up the dog—named Casper—and walking some distance with him before lowering his back legs and striking him several times to the head. He then lifted the dog horizontally and dropped him from chest height onto a concrete surface, where he landed on his belly.
The court heard that Casper was not Wilson’s dog.
A veterinary report described the blows as “deliberate and forceful,” adding: “Each strike would have caused pain and suffering. The drop from chest height onto hard ground also constitutes deliberate harm.”
Sentence and animal ban
Magistrates sentenced Wilson to 18 weeks in custody and disqualified him from keeping animals for 10 years. He was also ordered to pay £400 in costs. The court was told that Wilson had shown remorse and expressed a willingness to work with support agencies.
Dog recovered safely
RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper met the tri-coloured Jack Russell, Casper, on April 2, along with his rightful owner.
“He was bright and alert with no obvious injuries,” she said. “Thankfully, Casper was unharmed and back with his owner. However, it is clear that he endured a terrifying and painful ordeal. There is no excuse for treating any animal this way.”
The case was prosecuted under Section 4(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
