Sponsored walk and coffee morning support care at Llanelli hospital
A GROUP of schoolchildren from Whitland have raised thousands of pounds for a chemotherapy day unit — a cause close to their hearts.
Pupils at Ysgol Llys Hywel organised a sponsored walk to raise money for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, as a thank you for the care given to their Assistant Headteacher.
The fundraising effort was held in support of Caroline Thomas, who has been receiving treatment at the unit for the past two years.
The sponsored walk was one of two events arranged by the school community. A coffee morning also proved a major success, with the two initiatives raising a combined total of £2,600 for the unit.
‘Very lucky to have such a supportive community’
Headteacher Vanessa Roberts thanked pupils, parents and staff for their efforts, saying the school was fortunate to have such a close-knit and caring community where Caroline is well known and supported by all.
Caroline herself expressed her gratitude for the fundraising efforts.
She said: “I am so pleased with the amount raised by the children, parents and staff in their coffee morning and sponsored walk.”
Funds to improve patient care
Kath Watkins, Senior Sister at the Chemotherapy Day Unit, thanked the school for its generous donation.
“On behalf of the staff and patients at the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Prince Philip Hospital, I would like to thank Ysgol Llys Hywel for their fundraising efforts resulting in a very generous donation of £2,600,” she said.
“We are always looking at ways to improve the environment and improve the way we care for patients within the Chemotherapy Day Unit. Please be assured that this money will go towards this improvement. Thank you.”
The donation will support ongoing efforts to enhance facilities and patient experience at the Llanelli hospital unit.
