Foreign money has no place in UK politics

Imagine you’re at a pub quiz. You’re here to play fair, but someone from across the Atlantic slips in and buys the answers from the landlord. Feels unfair, right?

Picking up from my last piece about Top vs Bottom, there’s more to the story. The real problem isn’t just domestic squabbles—it’s foreign money, mainly American, sneaking in and trying to call the shots.

Political donations from outside the UK are meant to be illegal. But loopholes exist. Wealthy Americans, quietly funnelling cash through UK-registered companies or obscure associations, have found ways to pour money into parties and campaigns. The result? “Dark money” shaping decisions that affect all of us. That’s not democracy—it’s someone else buying the answers.

It’s easy to shrug and think, “It doesn’t affect me.” But it does. Money shapes policy. It decides which issues get airtime, whose voices are heard, and which communities are forgotten. MI5 has warned that foreign influence—from Russia to China—is a growing concern. If foreign governments and billionaires can bend UK politics, the rest of us? We’re left with scraps.

Even parties with good intentions aren’t immune. Reform UK had to return almost £200,000 from impermissible donors after rules were breached. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We’ve fought for fairness in this country before. Now it’s time to fight for fairness in politics. Close the loopholes. Ban foreign donations outright. Make transparency the rule, not the exception.

At the end of the day, it’s simple: politics should be run by the people who live here, for the people who live here. Foreign money has no business deciding our future. And right now—it’s time to take the interference out of our democracy before it’s too late.
